The priestly caste always wants to make the rules of society. Ayatollah or abbot, pope or pastor or pundit or pandit, mullah or medicine man, rabbi or most reverend, they make the rules, the taboos, define the major and minor sins, and deal out the penances. Our theoretical separation of church and state has become a sad joke as we are taxed to subsidize religious schools and politics is preached from the pulpit, abortion banned and even evolution, birth control and sex education under assault. I doubt there is a politician in America who would dare to run for office without professing a faith and a church membership. We have freedom of religion, but we certainly do not have freedom from religion.
